2009/05/04 Thank you for visiting Tsuwanoya’s website.
We would like to tell you a little bit about Yakushima and Tsuwanoya.
<1. About Yakushima 屋久島>
Yakushima was designated as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 1993. 107.47 km2, or about 20%, of the 504.88 km2 wide island is registered under the UNESCO World Natural Heritage program. The area covers the mountainous district centering on Mt. Miyanoura and extends to the coastal area of Seibu-rindou (Western Forestry Road).
Tsuwanoya is located in the Nagata District, which is the closest area to the World Natural Heritage Site. Although Tsuwanoya is close to the World Natural Heritage site, it is still some distance from some of the major tourist attractions on the island, such as Johmon-sugi, the 7,000 year-old cedar
Most of the shops on Yakushima are located in Miyanoura and Anbou. A very limited amount of English is spoken but people are friendly and will do their best to assist.
Please also note that outside of Miyanoura and Anbou, cell phone reception is poor or non-existent, especially in the mountainous areas and the Seibu-rindou (Western Forestry Road).
<2. Transportation 交通>
With no train system in Yakushima, cars are the only means of transportation in the island. It takes about two to three hours to drive around the island, without detours. Please refrain from exceeding the speed limit. Local residents live in small villages along the road and you are required to drive slowly in these areas, as roads can suddenly become very narrow.
When walking or driving, especially at night, please beware of wild animals such as monkeys and deer, which tend to stray into the middle of the roads.
Required time and taxi/bus fare to reach Tsuwanoya from major sites in the island:
From the airport:
Approximately 40 min. Local bus: 1,210 yen. Taxi: 7,000 yen or more
From the Miyanoura sea port:
Approximately 30 min. Local bus: 890 yen. Taxi: 5,000 yen or more
From the Anbou sea port:
One hour or more. Local bus: 1,440 yen. Taxi: 10,000 yen or more
There are five daily local buses to Tsuwanoya. If you are going by bus, please get off at Nagata, the last bus stop for Nagata. If you call us before your arrival, we can arrange to meet you at the Nagata bus stop to take you to the hotel.

We recommend renting a car if you are planning to stay on the island for three or more days. An International driving license is required to rent a car in Japan. Tsuwanoya has outdoor parking space, which is free of charge.
(レンタカー=renting a car )
<3. Building of Tsuwanoya 建物>
Tsuwanoya stands at the westernmost end of the Nagata district. Situated in a 66,000 m2 (about 16 acres) site amidst natural forest along the coastline of the East China Sea, Tsuwanoya is a quiet retreat with only 15 guest rooms in a single-story building.
Surrounded by natural habitat, you are likely to receive ‘courtesy visits’ from insects. If you prefer to avoid them, we recommend you stay in a western style room as the Japanese-style rooms face a roofed outdoor corridor

<4. Guest Rooms 客室>
The entrance of Tsuwanoya faces a parking area. The front desk is at the entrance hall, beyond which lies the dining room and the tea lounge. Further beyond are the six western style rooms, each of which is large enough to accommodate up to four people.
The indoor corridor in front of the western style rooms ends at the door leading to a roofed outdoor corridor. Once in the roofed outdoor corridor, the scenery dramatically changes. Eight Japanese-style rooms line one side of the corridor, and on the other side, trees, bushes and flowers grow in abundance. The Japanese-style rooms, although slightly smaller in area than the western-style rooms, are able to accommodate up to five people.
A special guest room is situated in front of the front desk.
Each room has a bathtub with a shower, a toilet, air conditioning, TV and an electric kettle. Each room is equipped with bath towels, face towels, Japanese Yukatas (informal cotton kimonos), toiletries and hair dryers. Ladies’ aromatic toiletries such as shampoo are also available upon request.

<5. Baths Outside Guestrooms パブリックバス>
At the end of the roofed outdoor corridor along from the Japanese style rooms are the open-air bath and the indoor rock bath.
The indoor rock bath is on the mountain side. The open-air bath overlooks the Nagata beach, enabling you to enjoy a splendid view of the East China Sea while you bathe. The water filling these baths are not Onsen (hot spring) water but the ultra soft natural water directly drawn from a river, which is also the source of the drinking water at Tsuwanoya. The bath water is heated for bathing.
The open-air and indoor baths are segregated by gender but use a two-hour shift rotation. Thus, while ladies are using the open-air bath, gentlemen are able to use the indoor rock bath. After two hours, ladies are then able to use the indoor rock bath, and so on. Times are posted outside each of the baths to avoid any confusion and to allow all our guests to take full advantage of the baths in Tsuwanoya. The open-air and indoor baths are available only from 15:00 to 21:00. You are requested to use the baths in your guest rooms outside of these hours.

The indoor rock bath (iwa-buro=岩風呂)

The open-air bath (roten-buro=露天風呂)
<6. Dining 食事 >
Breakfast and dinner is served in the dining room. Meals are Japanese-style and served in pre-fixed courses. They are cooked in the local Yakushima-style by ladies from the island. A typical dinner course consists of up to 7 dishes of varying seasonal ingredients accompanied by soup, rice and pickles, and followed by a homemade dessert.
The menu changes daily for guests who are staying for more than one night.
Please notify the hotel of any dietary restrictions or if you prefer a western continental-style breakfast at least 24 hours in advance and we will do our best to accommodate you. Unfortunately, we are unable to cater for religious dietary restrictions.
Please note, without proper advance notice, we are unable to accommodate any same-day requests. Please contact the hotel for further details.

Thank you again for visiting Tsuwanoya’s website. Please feel free to contact us for further information.
It is said that holy spirits of nature dwell in the mountains and rivers of Yakushima. You are therefore requested to respect the island and refrain from littering or polluting the water.
May you allow yourself to search your soul in the great nature of Yakushima and receive all the answers to your questions!
We look forward to serving you to make your stay comfortable and memorable. Thank you!
